I talked about the importance of properly cleansing the skin in
the previous post, now it's time to see what types of make-up removers are there. The most important thing you should know, is that you must
choose the make-up removers according to your skin type and needs. Every make-up remover should clearly state the type of skin is designed towards. In addition to this, the strength of the make-up removers depends on the type of make-up products you use and their number.
Say NO to the make-up wipes
The
make-up wipes. They seem to be the quickest fix if you are in a hurry, but they are not recommended on the long term for removing make-up. “Cleansing wipes don’t effectively clean the skin,” explains celebrity
aesthetician Renée Rouleau. “Instead, they just smear dirt, bacteria,
oil, and makeup across the face. It’s like applying cleanser to your
face and then not washing it off, or skipping the rinse cycle of your
laundry. Cleansing agents are designed to break down debris within the
pores, but it’s the rinsing action that actually
removes it."
“Women think they’ve cleansed their skin with a simple wipe, but this
isn’t the case,” adds aesthetician Kerry Benjamin. “There’s still oil
and debris that will clog pores, and products won’t be able to penetrate
without proper cleansing and exfoliation."
The cleansing fluid
that wipes are soaked in contains surfactants — detergent-like chemicals
that dissolve make-up and grime,’ says Dr Bunting. ‘If
the surfactants are too harsh, they will irritate skin, especially as,
without rinsing, some of those surfactants will be left on skin.’That
irritation can leave skin looking red or feeling sore and tight. It’s
like lathering your face with soap and then not washing it off.'
Moreover,
while surfactants can irritate skin from a chemical perspective, if you
get over-enthusiastic with a rough or textured wipe can cause
irritation and even leave scratches.
‘Alongside the surfactants, many of
these wipes contain alcohol as this helps them cut through thick and
tenacious make-up,’ says Dr Bunting. ‘However, while alcohol might clear stubborn lip-liner, it’s also effective at damaging skin.’
The traditional way : cleansing milk+toner
There are many types of cleansing products - they can be thicker or thinner in texture, depending on the type of skin; cheaper or more expensive depending on the ingredients, the reserch and the technology behind them.
If your skin has specific problems (acnee, intolerant/sensitive skin, rosacea), you should use dermatocosmetics. They are specifically designed as treatment to specific skin problems and they should be recommended by the doctor.
The toners are also very varied, depending on the type of skin and the budget. For me it is not optional: besides removing the residues from the make-up removers, it freshens the face and also balances the natural Ph of the skin.
Easy and fast with micellar waters
What is a micellar water ? It’s not a toner. It’s not a cleansing milk. It’s definitely not a face
wash. Micellar water is a skincare product that removes makeup and
cleanses the skin, without the need for rinsing. Micellar cleansing water is especially suitable for all types of
sensitive skin. There are many varieties available, including
formulations for oily, dry or sensitive skins.
Micellar water takes its name from micelles, tiny round balls of
cleansing molecules that float in the water. When you apply the product
to your skin, the cleansing agents come into contact with oil and dirt
on your face, allowing them to be swept away quickly and efficiently.
Micellar
cleansing water uses very gentle but effective cleansing agents. There
is no tingling or tightening effect, and it’s powerful enough to remove
eye makeup, so there is no need for a separate makeup remover.
Hot right now - oil based make-up removers
Most beauty products proudly boast that they are"oil-free" and they are recommended to almost each skin type, especially the combination or oily skin. However, when our skin
is stripped of its natural oils, it produces more oil to compensate.
For those with oily skin, this means more breakouts, blackheads, and
aggravated skin. For those with dry skin or sensitive skin, it means the
skin is going to get even drier and more irritated. The solution is not to remove the oil completely from the beauty products.
Using
the oil based products to cleanse your face of make-up, means that it will naturally dissolve the dirty
oils on your skin without using harsh chemicals. Not
only is this method simpler, more affordable, better for your skin, but the oil-cleansing method is the best make-up remover for the most stubborn or long-lasting products. It removes mascara, eyeliner, foundation,
everything—all in one step!
How to use :
Apply to dry face and massage into skin. Rinse off with warm water or
remove with a wet muslin cloth for a more thorough cleanse.
This make-up removing method is a good oportunity for a little 'me-time' pampering. While using the oil based make-up remover gently and slowly massage your face and neck; this will also help to boost circulation and keep your skin really healthy and glowing.
In the end, it doesn't matter what type of make-up removers you use, as long as you use them ! Properly cleanse your face, nourish it with the right ingredients and protect it from the sun and other damaging factors and you will have a flawless, glowing, hapy skin ! Because you deserve it ! Until next time ,
